Rollercoaster

On this last day of the year 2014,
I am exhausted.
The last days of December are always full.
Full of people, full of memorable moments, full of activities.
good food, festive music, pleasant movies.

From the moment I unpack my favorite decorations
it is like riding a roller coaster.
You go in out of freewill. Exited, expecting, giddy.
But sometimes you come out exhausted and a tad nauseous.

I have always needed solitude to reload.
To gather my self together and to stay balanced.
The lack of a normal schedule and the days crammed with obligations
have drained me.
And I am left feeling exhausted,
both mentally and physically.

But I am surrounded by my favorite people,
and I have found the courage to allow myself to simply pause.
To walk around in my pajamas, listen to my favorite music
and simply be.

Tonight many of you will party and drink champagne.
You will put on make up and dress up to go out.
You will be surrounded by friends, family or partying strangers.

I will at home with my family.
We will drag our mattresses into the living room
and play a few games or watch television.
I will celebrate the new year and go to sleep pretty early.

For now,
this is the perfect New Years Eve
After all,
I'm not one to ride the roller coaster twice.

Have fun tonight!

~

Lekker eten, sfeervolle muziek, gezellige films.

hebben me leeggezogen

make up opdoen en zichzelf feestelijk aankleden.

Merry Christmas.

Christmas shots are always a problem for my family.
Trying to get 5 people in one picture is impossible around here.

One person is missing, one is acting ridiculous.

Now someone else is missing.

Nu mist er weer iemand anders.

Weirdo factory.

Rariteiten fabriek.

Still weird.

Nog steeds raar.

My head is huge in this picture, one kid is making a weird face.
But his will have to do.

Merry Christmas!!

Fijne kerst!!

Moms don't get sick.

It is that time of the year again.
I take my child to school, and hope that they'll survive the annual germ fest.
When I hear kids coughing, I pray to God that no one coughs in my child's face.
If one of my kids does get sick, I hope that the kid doesn't infect the rest of the family.
But mostly I pray that I won't get sick.

Because Moms can't be sick.

Because I don't do sick very well.
And I don't have time to get sick.
Sick usually means, feeling sick but still doing everything.
There's laundry, and dinners and a house that has to be cleaned.
Children that have to be taken to school and sports,
groceries that have to be done.

And Moms can't get sick, they can't.

Of course I got sick this past week, you know I did.
I didn't just get sick, I got epic sick.
As in: laying in bed alternately shivering and sweating.
As in: not eating, hardly even drinking anything for 4 days.
Not being able to speak because my tonsils were the size of small beach balls.
And I did nothing around the house. Nothing.
Because you need to be able to stand firmly on your feet
to be able to do anything.
The least.

I haven't done anything around here in 6 days.
That has never happened before.
Ever.
Even when I broke my shoulders, I did all I could do with one arm.
4 days after gallbladder surgery I was picking up toys.
Although I needed to rest.
Why?

Because of that Moms don't get sick crap.

Why do we do this?
Why do we snort when someone says: you should go back to bed?
Why do we give ourselves one day in bed,
then crawl out of bed and resume our busy lives
running on Tylenol and orange juice.
Moms get sick. All the time.
There's nothing abnormal about that.
The abnormality is,
that we don't take time to get well again.

Want er is nog steeds de was; het avondeten; een huis dat moet worden schoongemaakt;
kinderen die naar school en naar sport moeten worden gebracht;

Misty.

In the fall we get a lot of misty mornings.
On those mornings, especially on weekends
I find it hard to pull up my blankets and stay in bed a little while longer.
Mist may appear to be nothing special,
but you'll be amazed when get a little closer.

Mist lijkt misschien niets bijzonders,

From this morning, taken with my phone.

These pictures were taken a few weeks ago.
But I have fotographed in the mist before.
Some of these picture have been already shared on this blog, some haven't.
Here are some older pictures.

And I end with a recent picture,
Haven't I proven to you that mist is fantastic?

Decision.

It is possible to loose yourself many times in life.
Not for all people, I guess.
I know some people that never will get lost in expectations,
demands or determination to be the best version of themselves.
Some people will never get crippled by the unending demands to deliver nothing less than perfection.
Some people will never experience the battle between your own needs
and whatever it is that they think is more important.
Some will never choose repeatedly against their own needs.

Those people are blessed.
They will not get stuck or find themselves trying to operate with a dead battery.

I do.
I find myself there over and over and over again.

Sometimes I think that the battle against perfectionism is a much harder one than the battle against depression.
I am fairly certain that this is the thing that fuels my depression and triggers the heavy loaded episodes.
Days filled with thoughts of self doubt and failure.

I keep climbing out of the shades and I keep continuing my walk towards the sunlight.
Sometimes it is but a step to be back in the light.
Other days the climb is a hard one and asks of me to muster all the skills and strength that I can find.

There are those that will never understand this.

Those people will see my tripping and falling as a sign of a weak character.
They will try to offer me tough love and make sure that I am aware of their thoughts about me.
Little do they know that every time they express their opinion,
they kick me a little deeper or throw me back over the cliff.

Back in the cliff of darkness, where I try to sort the lies from the truth.

Is it me?
Is it lack of strength that got me here?
Am I weak?
Do I lack faith in God?
Will I get past this, if I would just make a choice?

As I nurse my wounds and prepare myself for the climb,
I will make the only decision that matters:

I will not be condemned by the number of times I slip and fall.

And no matter how much time it takes me,
I will never settle for a life in the shades.
I will always get back up again.

(Note: I am fine. This is something I recently went through.)

Tiny lessons of life.

Apples and Roses

Apples and Roses

I made these pictures a few weeks ago on a very misty morning.
Just a few trees in the fog.

Just now my son said something about the little heart shape between the trees,
formed by the leaves.

[pause...]

Did you see it?
I never saw it till he pointed it out to me.

Always look for the extraordinary in the ordinary, right?
Life lesson learned.

Levensles geleerd.

The perfect fit.

I have always had trouble knowing where to fit in.
Today I'm at World Moms Blog talking about it.
I would love it if you'd visit me there.
Thanks!

Dankjewel!

Happy Friday!
That's all.

Little surprises.

 I can be quite forgetful.
Imagine my surprise when I opened up a book and this fell out.
Simple fragile delight that brought a smile to my face.
Sometimes it is fun being me.
~

Milestones

I know it has been ages since I posted anything.
I am planning to return to my regular posting soon, just so you know.
Because if anything, I am still a blogger at heart,
and I am posting this picture as proof.

 See? Zie je wel?

Anyway, I am not really here today, I am over at World Moms Blog.
Today I am talking about an important milestone in my life right now.
One that had me publicly crying at my sons school play a few weeks ago.
And I do not like crying in public..

Want to know what I am talking about? Click here to visit my post at WMB.

Vintage paper love.

applesandroses

I adore vintage paper, and I have always wanted to try decoupage.
Last Easter I experimented and made decoupage eggs and was very pleased with the result.
I'm officially in love with Modge Podge. (Special glue.)

(Speciale lijm.)

For my latest project, I used a cheaper version of Modge Podge called Crea Podge;
little plain wooden drawers from Ikea and scrapbook paper.

Voor mijn laatste project,
heb ik een goedkoper versie van Modge Podge gebruikt die Crea Podge heet;

Goals

Apples and Roses

Investments; long term goals; short term goals.
I bet that you think that those things have nothing to do with parenting.
Today I am over at World Moms blog,
explaining how these words have everything to do with parenting.
Hop on over and see what it is that I am talking about.

I would love it if you leave some comment love.
You can visit my post here.

Investeringen; lange termijn doelen; korte termijn doelen.

Apple blossom.

Little things, big smiles.

Almost three years ago,
I planted the tiniest little apple tree I have ever seen.
I wrote about it in this post.
Now, it is blooming for the first time.
Little things give the biggest smiles.

Bijna drie jaar geleden,

Little things, big smiles.

Little things, big smiles.

Enjoy spring.

I can't stop enjoying the changing of the seasons and everything that comes with it.
I find the transition between winter and spring especially hopeful and promising.
The longer days, the greater amount of light, the sprouting of green everywhere
and the lovely smell that fills the air.
You know, that smell of green mixed with the smell of dirt,
blossom and the smell right after a rain shower.

And to think that I get to enjoy this year after year.
No matter how busy I am sometimes,
I always make time to spend with my hands in the dirt,
to inhale the scent of spring blossom or to simply close my eyes
and enjoy the feeling of the warm spring sun on my face.

Ugly.

If you have come here to look at my usual posts...please look away.
I cannot write about beauty today. I am to angry.

The local elections (municipal elections) ended in an absolute low for me.
It wasn't the outcome nor the turn-out that got to me.
It was politician Wilders statements about Moroccans.

What has happened to this country?
Why is there no outrage?
Why isn't the whole country in turmoil?
Why aren't the streets filled with angry people?

Wilders is standing in front of his party and is asking a series of questions.
He's working towards the climax, the finale, the final question:
"Do you want more or less Moroccans in this city and in this country?"
His party responses by chanting: "less, less!"

That what drives Wilders, what motivates him
or what sewer like substance abides within his head doesn't interest me,
 doesn't shock me.
I have seen hatred in many forms in my life.
Wilders has a thing against Moroccans. So be it.

Wilders has chosen the easiest group of people to hate publicly.
We are suspicious of Muslims as it is and in every tv show Al Qaida has it in for us.
It is trendy to have a thing against Moroccans in  this country.
And it seems to be normal to say negative things about Moroccan people aloud,
without anyone looking twice.
"Yes it is true, they are really annoying,"I hear often.
And, "They don't speak the language and they don't work."

Ehm, no, it is not true.

We are taking a part of a group and applying that to the whole group.
I know enough highly educated well Dutch speaking Moroccans.
It would be offensive to take the trashy (fictive) Dutch family that lives next to me
and assume that all Dutch families are the same.
And it wouldn't be very intelligent of me to do so, by the way.

Earlier this week, comparisons to Hitler have been made.
Wilders thought it was disgusting.
He didn't like that he is repeatedly being compared with Nazi's.
Suddenly Wilders was the victim.

We can discuss whether it is okay to compare people to Hitler.
We could just have a long dragging discussion about it.
I don't think that that's the issue here.

The point is, that I as a Dutch person of color,
I understand why the comparison is being made.
Whether I am Moroccan or not.
Apparently it is possible, even if you are born in this country;
 even if you study or work hard;
even if you speak the language and are well integrated,
apparantly it is possible to be put in a 'box' of people
and to be told to leave the city or country.
Because this is what it looks like from my point of view.

And everyone is simply watching.
They don't realize that it is wrong to think this way,
that it is dangerous to think this way.
And that is frightening.

We can not make the comparison to Nazi's.

This is all I am saying:
There has been a time before,
when a man started speaking  increasingly negative about a group of people.
And those people were purely selected based on their religion
and cultural background.

Take Wilders statement and replace Moroccans
with women, gay people or black people.
See, if the shivers don't run down your spine.
